Unfortunately because of limited space we won't be able to fit all the
stalls in, these questions will help us make a selection. Spaces will be
1/2 table each and we'll be asking a donation of £1 to £5 from stall
holders on the day. We're aiming for the Bristol Radical Zine Fest to be a
celebration of grassroots D.I.Y. culture!

Happened the other week. The Radical Walking Group was cool and it was nice to see the people.

We did a stall with Pearl (Peach Melba) and got some new zines to distro including Adventures in Menstruating and Scratch That Itch.

The first ever fanzine convention to be held in the beautiful setting of Victoria Baths will explore the past, present and future of self-publishing through stalls featuring self-published books and zines to browse, talks, a film showing and workshops.

Manchester's opulent Edwardian water palace, which opened to the public in 1906 and closed in 1993, will be packed with events as part of the Future Everything festival.

To have a stall on the day, either as an individual zine or group of friends, costs £10. Apply by emailing Natalie.Rose.Bradbury AT googlemail.com.

CALL FOR ZINES: This is a call to all zine makers to have their zine shown in our 2011 ART OF ZINES exhibition at Anno Domini gallery. For over a decade A.D. has supported and promoted urban contemporary arts, performance & music and we believe zines have an important place in our efforts. Zines are one of the last frontiers for freedom of speech and creative self expression and we need it now more than ever.

We are especially interested in art, music, poetry, photography and other creative disciplines but are open to all zines in any format and content. Current and past issues are accepted, one copy of each is adequate. (If you choose, you may send zine multiples and/or promo cards and we'll put it out on the free counter for the taking.)

To make the exhibit a little sweeter, this year's zine show will be coordinated with the SubZERO Festival in our district which draws 10,000 - 12,000 people that enjoy the subculture artists, performers and musicians in our region. The festival takes place out front of our gallery doors in a three block area called the SoFA District. It's also the First Friday art walk with 20 venues participating. The exhibit indoors at A.D. will run for approximately 4 weeks.

Please note we do not return zines, nor will we sell them (they are just for exhibit and enjoyment purposes), but we do induct them into our zine library so they may live on.

We'd like to have all the zines for the A.D. exhibit in hand by May 21, 2011. Please email me to let me know you'll be sending us your zine, and feel free to contact us should you have additional questions. You are welcome to extend this call to other friends or forums you think will be a good fit.

The exhibition opening reception is on First Friday June 3rd, 7-11pm.

(A "spot" will be 1 standard table length.) You'll have to bring your own table/chair, we'll provide the space and lights for the evening. London Zine Symposium was fun. So fun in fact that we're going to the Zine Fest at the Women's Library on 12th June too. Mujinga has been at TAA (Temporary Autonomous Art) in London with hoojemaflap this week as well.

London is probably getting sick of us.

I made an inventory flyer but didn't have time to print them for the LZS, I was waylayed chopping vegetables for the Anarchist Teapot who were catering the zine symposium. Possibly a good thing though as we've managed to acquire some more zines since then, including On't Road, Bonuscupped, Angry at the Bus Stop and Letters to Australia. The new Loserdom had arrived and I'm hoping to get some of the new issue of Mild Peril, new WWHRD?, and some copies of Crucial Zine tooooo.

WWHRD also sold out entirely at the LZS.

There seem to be loads of zine fests popping up all around as well at the moment. Bradford zine fest is on 20th June. Leeds was going to have one but the organiser has postponed it for the moment, she may be attempting it in July so we'll wait and see.

A Birmingham group have just got together and are planning a zine fest there, I don't think they've got a date yet, and Tunbridge Wells are gonna be hosting a zine fest too! I've got some flyers about it in the hoojemaflap box (i.e. not on me) so can't remember if they've set a date yet, but it's all very exciting. I don't think we'll make it to Bradford cus it's on a Sunday and it's quite far and we were going to go to a beer festival the night before. Should be lovely though.

Sup. We've been going through a lull.

London Zine Symposium is here to give us a kick up the beehind though, so look out for us on Saturday, we'll be there with the Brighton Zine Fest table...not that you'll be able to distinguish us from anyone else..apparently we'll be in the punk rock area and sat next to Cherry Bomb Comics and the awesome Melissa.

I'm working on some kind of flyer inventory thing to hand out, probably would have been better if I planned this more than one day in advance though, oh well.

We've had a few more hoojemaflap additions recently that haven't made their way onto the inventory yet, the new Ploppypants issue which is a split zine with ah, someone who I can't remember, apparently Mujinga knows her from his mispent youth though. its a cracker anyway. Also getting some issues of the new Loserdom in, and Alex is sending out some more issues of Jerk Store seeing as our last lot went so quick. Ah, also Lights Go Out # 7. Phew.

February is exceedingly busy.

First a few new additions to the distro in the shape of the new issues of Suspect Device and Jerk Store, plus a new split zine from Ripping Thrash and You Can't Say No To Hope! Woah there.

At least they are new additions in theory as we haven't received them yet at Hoojemaflap HQ. Well, we haven't technically paid for them yet. Excitement levels remian high however.

Excitement levels may go into overdrive in two weeks time because it's the frigging Brighton Zine Fest! We've got loads of great stall holders coming and Hoojemaflap will be making an appearance somewhere. If you've got a zine and you want to bring it down then we have an individual zines table where you can drop it (thanks for the idea London!) but just come and have a LOOK at all the PRETTY things that will be there. Saturday 20th Feb, Hanover Community Centre, Brighton. 1.30-5.30pm

Also, just because we're not busy enough already this month Hoojemaflap will be hauled out to various gigs around Brighton. Probably. It could all go to pot if we get drunk.

I got completely drenched TWICE in one weekend, met nice new people, drank real ale in real pubs, went to a punk show in a conservatory and managed to pick up some bargains at John Dyas. And we sold some zines. And Unity FM focken rocks!

The Brighton Zine Fest lot got invited down to the Penthouse (bar above the Freebutt) last SUnday to join the Felt-Up craft club kids for an afternoon of knitting, reading, drawing and tea. Emma from the zine fest collective did a little how to makea zine workshop which was nice and we took the distro down for people to havea look through. I fink we sold one thing too but can't remember what it is. Anyway Rachael from Felt-Up was lovely and I recommend you check out the felt-up things. I think they might be changing it to Tuesday evenings.

The Penthouse has got really nice now too and their ciders is WELL cheap its like £2.40 or something which meant I could have 2 pints instead or my intended one. Megan who put on the Southampton Zine and Craft Fair knows the people who do the Penthouse now and they're lovely. We were thinking bout having a zine social night. Shebang zine do some kind of music night there too.

Distro at actual gig shock!

After a rather long break from taking zines to shows I finally overcame the laziness last night to go to Social Circkle at the Greenhouse Effect in Hove. It was actually a really good show, I'd never been to the venue before but it was a nice dingy little basement affair with reasonably good sound, the only downside was the utterly ridiculouse bar prices, £3.30 for a pint of Strongbow! Social Circkle were pretty awesome and I would have liked to get a record but had spent all my money on a No Hope For The Kids record before said awesomeness was established. The support bands were Nowhere Fast, The Hard Way and the Teen Sheikhs who were all really good. I'm going to have to track down the Nowhere Fast 7" online I think.

The zine distro went ok, I was sharing a table with the Nowhere Fast guys but had enough room to spread out some zines and put the box on a stool for people to browse. Had a good few people flick through zines but only sold 3 inclusing the last copy of Ploppypants #8. Also sold one of our new additions, the Squatters Handbook 13th edition:

I'm feeling kind of motivated to take the distro to more gigs now. The next thing we've got lined up though (I think) is the Southampton zine fair 21st/22nd November:

october zine social

Well the October zine social went quite well yesterday - we cooked a roast and all got real stuffed. It featured Emma's cake-like yorkshire puddings, Mujinga's home-grown potatoes and some not quite cooked carrots. The peas were good. And gravy actually! That was grand.

I gave Ellie a rocket plant which we planted. I don't hold out much hope for it though coz instead of watering it, she sprinkled it liberally with lamp oil....

Alternative Press are hosting another awesome evening of Zines, comix, book arts and poetry at our second Zine Friendly event at the foundry, in order to promote our new project, the Zine Friendly Blog! A resource for Self Publishers far and wide, we will be listing venues, promoters, stockists and events that are all “Zine Friendly”!

To celebrate this we are inviting small pressers everywhere to come down and promote their own work. For free! All we are asking is that people donate what they can, even a zine or two, to help Alternative Press to keep promoting the scene.

There will be communal tables with lots of space for self publishers to sell their work. Also, printmakers or those with large work are encouraged to use the walls as a spontaneous temporary free arts space where you can stick up your work DIY style! BYOB (Bring Your Own Blu-tak!) Also, we are inviting some zine distributors to represent as much of what is going on in the scene as we can.

We’ll be having a cake sale with free tea, Knitting circle, CD compilation lucky dip (just bring a cd of your own favourite music and take your pick!), free blank zines for you to use and a poetry workshop followed by some performances and a short open mic…

Things will kick off at 7pm until around 11pm.

So last night was the Arteries gig at the Hobgoblin, we took the distro down. When we got there the bands were setting up and we managed to nab a good size table next to the other merch people and laid out a selection of zines. We were sat next to a fellow zine distro man called Will who had a little box of vegan/freegan/anarchy zines, I got one about CCTV for free, and picked up some kick ass patches from Microscosm for a quid each:

I didn't manage to chat to Will but it was great to see other zines out at gigs. We sold quite a few, we're almost out of Ploppy Pants and the Zonked/Suspect Device split zine. There was an unfortunate incident with curry being spilt on a copy of Loserdom but it only suffered minimal smearing damage and the chap who was responsible paid for it (I think he was the guitarist from the Arteries actually!).

All the bands were really good as well, enjoyed Serf Combat and Apologies I Have None a lot. The dutch band Sweet Empire were staying at my house after the gig so I hung around with them and stayed up way too late drinking. Their touring driver/merch guy Daniel does a zine called Twisted Rights and Crooked Wrongs so it was cool to meet him and trade some zines. I even grabbed some of issues 3 and 4 off him to stock up the distro with.

Wicked night in all, makes me all enthusiastic about doing this distro lark more! Now for a busy weekend prancing around London!

Gadgie #24 just in and online skatezines a-go-go

Rightyo, guess I'd better make some sort of first post attempt. What better way to start off though, than with the arrival in post of the new issue of Gadgie!

It's issue 24 from Marv (and oh! Debbie Harry is on the front cover) and his enthusiasm for punk rock and the Boston (UK of course) punk scene shows no sign of waning despite his advanced years. In an attempt to chronicle the punk rock history of Boston (this is part II) there's an interview with Aston from Boss Tuneage who's formative gig experiences took place there, and some recollections of the late Jas Toomer and associated mischief.
The rest of the zine is mainly Marv's personal writing about topics as varied as going on holiday to Scotland with his family, his first encounter with a twat using a handsfree phone, misheard song lyrics, and an account of Marv's newest football injury (which isn't half as boring as it sounds thanks to the great writing).
Then there's the usual zine and music reviews tucked away in the back, refreshingly it's not just pages of Marv writing about stuff he's been sent but doesn't like, which is nice because not only do I read all the reviews I also will be getting a hold of at least 2 or the records he recommends. Get it innit.

I've been recently thinking about getting back into skateboarding now its summer again so I've spent a lot of my day at work discreetly watching skate videos on the computer. Also been checking out online skate zines, my favourite so far is http://www.ironxhanger.blogspot.com/ which I guess is technically a blog but it's really nicely done and better than the more magaziney type Lowcard (http://lowcardmag.com/) and Tweaker zine (http://www.tweakerzine.com/). Then there is, of course, Thrasher's online home (http://www.thrashermagazine.com/) which, obviously, has more stuff than the other sites but I still get peed off with the juvenile boy masculinity focus.

If anyone knows any good web or UK print zines out there that are about skating, tell me please. Or, probably rarer still, any zines or video archives or whatever that are by, for, or about female skaters. That would make me very happy.
